A list of (what I believe to be) the most important traits of great leaders. What would you add?

Great Leaders…….

  • Motivate and Inspire others;  Others “want to” rather than “have to”
  • Pick the right people for the right roles
  • Are seen as leaders in the eyes of every member of the organization
  • Deliver results through action
  • Have empathy for others
  • Are genuine and of the highest character
  • Are able to truly look at situations from the viewpoint of others
  • Are able to make the toughest decisions without detrimental delay
  • Put the largest amount of focus on the highest impact areas in the organization
  • Do not promote or tolerate drama
  • Foster and understand the importance of a great culture
  • Enjoy and see value in getting their hands dirty
  • Ask WHY and demand an answer to that question before allowing anyone to be distracted about the HOW
  • Proactively look for both opportunities and problems
  • Re-actively correct issues in a way that they do not come up again
  • Require potential solutions to be put forth as part of any issue reported; they expect others to think and grow continuously
  • Inspect what they expect

What do you think is missing from this list?

  1. Great list! In my opinion, I would add that great leaders also:
    – Show love and compassion for things that matter the most to them.
    – Have an unwavering confidence that is larger than themselves, and rely on that supernatural strength to persevere through the toughest of circumstances towards success.
    – Stand strong on their convictions, but are willing to make sacrifices and compromise where necessary to achieve a favorable outcome.
